I hope you have all had a good
month. Thank you for your e-mails as I enjoy hearing
from my readers!
I have learned in my nearly 49 years of living that certain kinds of life situations and disappointments call for a choice in life: whine or move on in a positive manner. Truth be told, my month was very stressful, as hubby Steve and I had put our cottage-style condo on the market and it "sold" within three days to the first person who walked in. Yes, that sounds like a dream come true, but five days before we were to move, had put some of our things in storage, all moving arrangements had been made, and the escrow officer assured us everything was a "done deal," our buyer fired her agent and her financing fell through due to an unscrupulous lender. We were as meticulous about all of this up front as possible, but alas, there is only so much one can do. It's life. The words, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade" came to mind, so, I decided to focus on all the positive writing assignments I was working on this month and I managed to complete some really fun writing projects for several great clients, which made us both happy! For me, writing isn't work, it's FUN! I've been doing it since I was a kid, and I loved it way back then too. It's my passion! And I think having at least one passion prevents one from becoming dull. :) Our home is back on the market, so hopefully I will be writing to you about our next new great place soon. After evaluating our current stage of life, for the next chapter, I have my heart set on a low-maintenance apartment on a top floor in a resort-like Southern CA complex. Ditto hubby Steve. I want to be high up in the trees--where it's quiet--something that seems hard to come by in today's noisy world! I've already affectionately named our prospective new place "Tea/Tee for Two Treehouse" and am planning my "indoor garden" decorating look since I won't have an outdoor garden to maintain. For some reason, I can't get a treehouse out of my head....guess you could say, like the treehouse book I mention below, that I want to live "out on a limb!" On another note, I had a very nice thing happen this month when I recently wrote to my very favorite writing teacher from my college alma mater, South Dakota State University , and I received a delightful return e-mail from Dr. Charles Woodard. It's been nearly 30 years, and he remembered me from when I was a young aspiring writer and English literature student. I knew he was a special professor, so I wasn't surprised to learn that his own book was nominated for a Pulitzer prize! And he has received numerous other awards. See my No Woman is an Island section below to read more about this fascinating and dedicated writing teacher and our re-connecting story. Have a great month! Blessings! Kathryn :) P.S. I will be sending you my new Postal Annex address and new phone number in a separate e-mail so be on the lookout for it, please!

Trish combines her background in stage set design with landscape design and has even studied privately with Rosemary Verey, author and acclaimed landscape designer for England's Queen Mother. She calls herself, "obnoxiously obsesssed" with gardens! Like anyone who is gifted at their chosen craft, I call it FOCUSED. Recently Trish added talented Landscape Designer Allison Eckert to her staff. They specialize in creating beautiful outdoor rooms for their high-end clients and have several styles of gardens to view at Trish's live garden showcase, including Old World Elegance, Cozy Cottage Cute, and Asian.
Trish hired me recently to write her bio for
submission to BH&G, and I have
also
written copy for two brochures that she gives out to her
clients. We'll soon be working on some Q&A copy for
her
new website. She's a
delightful writing client and I am so happy for her
success!

Q: Are there any topics that are
your favorites to write about
and any you choose not to
write about?
A: Yes! I write about anything that is positive and pretty. For instance, my favorite topics are home, garden, weddings, art, Christian inspiration, and feature articles of all kinds. I not only don't like to write about sordid topics, I refuse. You won't find my byline on the front page of the newspaper, for instance. I feel my mission in life is to put positive energy out into the world and to use my gift of writing, which I feel is God-given, to focus on topics that cheer people up. My writing and consulting clients are publications and creative entrepreneurs who share the same viewpoint and are putting their own gifts and talents into the world in a positive way through their own work. I love working with these types of clients!
I found this quote recently and it
got me thinking about the people who have helped me
along in life.
"No matter what accomplishments you make, somebody helped you." --Althea Gibson, Wimbeldon Winner I mentioned to you earlier that I recently sent an email to my favorite college writing professor of nearly 30 years ago, Dr. Charles Woodard, at South Dakota State University. I thanked him for all I learned from him as I had him for several writing classes. I owe him a debt of gratitude for the writing skills I have today. In addition, he inspired me to become a writing teacher myself. Dr. Woodard was the kind of teacher who was dedicated to his students, recognized and encouraged their talent, and expected them to succeed. From him I learned to edit, edit, edit. Recently when one of my magazine editors complimented me on being able to write in 400 words what she was struggling to teach another writer to do who insisted on 800 words, I smiled and said, "Thank Dr. Woodard!" He taught me brevity. (Although you'd never know it by the length of this e-newsletter!) :) I was delighted to receive the following e-mail response from my dear professor, who over the years earned a Pulitzer prize nomination and many other accolades. Indeed, I was not surprised to find that out.
Hello Kathy, (my college
age name!)
It was very good to hear from you. I remember you
well - you were such a good student and a very
interesting person. Thank you for your kind words
about those days. For me, such affirmation is the real
reimbursement for teaching. That's exciting news
about your writing. Let me know when the
GUIDEPOSTS story is published. I'll be very
interested in reading that, as I'd be interested in
hearing more about your life these days.
Sincerely,
Charles Woodard Did I mention he was a dedicated teacher? By his response, he still is! Blessings to Dr. Woodard for his gift to me of teaching me to write. Was there a teacher in your life who affected your life and work profoundly? How about looking them up today and sending them a note of appreciation? ...And stay tuned as I tell you next month about my story Dr. Woodard mentioned above being published by Guideposts books, one of the world's leading inspirational publishers. I'll be introducing you to two friends who helped me along in that endeavor too... Because after all, NO WOMAN IS AN ISLAND!
